Besides the obvious adventures you can have with your lantern, such as camping, I hope that this post will illustrate all of the other ways you can use one and have fun doing it.
These are the things that I have come up with from all the different times I have used one:
- shrimping
- night walks
- backyard camping
- power outages
- blanket reading
- balcony
- mechanics
Shrimping - If you live near a lake or have vacationed near one, you have probably seen lights out at night in the water. These are people looking for shrimp which are best caught at night. A camping lantern is perfect for this.
Night Walks - Going for a bush walk at night would require light and sometimes torches are not bright enough. Just one or two lanterns will do the job and you won’t need them at the camp site because you are not there.

Backyard Camping - Even if you never go camping for real, many households will have a great time by letting their children do so in the backyard. This is the perfect time to make use of an item that gets rarely used.
Power Outages - If you have a lantern that you are not using for camping, keep it around the house, and not stashed away in the garage or somewhere you cannot locate. Instead of stocking up on candles and matches and lighters in case there is a power outage you can use your handy lantern.
Blanket Reading - This may be a far out idea, but instead of a torch under the blankets for secret reading, a camping lantern can be better because the light will be so much brighter. Just make sure that the one you use is not a kerosene one or a noisy one.
Balcony - Some of my friends and I have balconies where, for some reason, the wiring for the lights were just never installed. We have a couple of lanterns hanging where we can when we are not camping and it lights up the place just fine. We have outdoor folding chairs too so it feels like we are on vacation.
Mechanics - Another great place to use your lantern is when you are working on your car. This also applies to other equipment you work on at night or need to crawl under. It does not have to be night time because there are many spaces under your cars hood that does not get enough light even in the day time.
You may have many more interesting and adventurous ways that you have used your lantern other than camping. If you would like, you can suggest them and everyone else can have a great time with such a simple item.
